Sewers

Many improvements occurred during the first half of the 19th century but there was still an inadequate sewer system for a growing city of one million inhabitants. The prefect at the time, George Hausmann knew the importance in the role of the sewers in fighting plagues an keeping Paris clean. These same sewers became one of the wonders of the city.
