Introduction

Our goal for this project is to serve as an on-line tutorial for Islamic Architecture, to make images and information accessable though the internet. Currently our main focus is the architecture of the Ottoman Empire with some exceptions of other outstanding Islamic mosques, such as Dome of the Rock(Israel), The Great Mosque(Iraq), Kab'a(Saudiaurabia), Great Mosque of Cordoba(Spain), and Hagia Sophia(Turkey). The Ottoman Empire first improtant date is 1453, when the Ottomans took over Constantinople, modern Istanbul and when the Byzantine empire fell. Many of the mosques built during the period between 12th and 18th century are seen as the highlights of Islamic architecture and we have made an effort to include the ones who represent this era of beautyful decoration and great architecture. The Ottoman buildings represent a major portion of the historical architecture of religion. The architecture was very influential by the former Byzantine and Seljuk archtecture. From Byzantine came the domes, baked bricks and tiles, from Seljuk came iwans, carved stonework, and the use of spolia.
The projects images and information comes from the San Jose State University's slide room collection. They reflect professor Kathleen Cohen's world wide traveling, and we are very thankful to her for letting us use her images.
